01 — Mindset

THE RULES
OF THE GAME

The artists who blow up aren't the most talented. They're the ones who play by different rules. Here are six of the seven that separate the ones who compound from the ones who plateau.

Rule 01
Volume beats perfection.

Every video is a lottery ticket. The algorithm tests each one against a small batch first — if it gets traction, it pushes further. The only way to win is more tickets in play. Post even when you're not sure.

Rule 02
The algo has different taste than you.

The video you think is bad can blow up. The one you're proud of can flop. Stop filtering before posting. Your job is to give the algorithm options — its job is to find the audience.

Rule 03
Instagram Trials is your most powerful lever.

Trials Reels are shown exclusively to non-followers before touching your audience. Wait minimum 3 days before publishing. You're getting free reach to strangers — most artists skip this entirely.

Rule 04
When something blows up — reuse its audio.

The algorithm found your audience through that sound. It keeps pushing content to people who already reacted to it. Use the same audio on everything after a viral hit and ride the wave as long as it runs.

Rule 05
Never delete an underperforming video.

Deleting resets the algorithm's understanding of your page. A slow video can get picked up weeks later when a related piece takes off. Leave everything up — even the flops. Every post is data, not a verdict.

Rule 06
Reply to comments in the first hour.

The algorithm reads comment activity as a quality signal. A burst of replies in the first 60 minutes tells the platform this content is worth pushing further. The first hour is the most valuable window you have.

The real unlock: Most artists treat every post like a standalone moment. The artists who compound treat every post as data. One video that performs tells you exactly what to make next — and the algorithm will push it harder because you're already in its system.

02 — Content

6 OF THE 8
VIDEO CONCEPTS
THAT ALWAYS WORK.

These formats work across every genre. Adapt the energy, setting, and vibe to your universe — the structure stays the same. These are your rotating content pillars. Use them in rotation so you never run out of ideas.

01
Aesthetic / Strong Setting

Slow motion in a setting that matches your branding. Let the music and the visual do the work. No action needed — just atmosphere. Works best when the location itself communicates something about who you are.

"need this on a rooftop in Barcelona at midnight"
02
Standing Vibe

Artist standing in a strong spot. Confident and present. No action, just energy. The viewer feels who you are before they hear a word. Strong for artists with a clear visual identity — the camera does the work.

"life is peak" or a precise, specific situation
03
Bench / Glitch

Seated in a setting with visual glitches on the beat. Contemplative mood. Drives curiosity and comments. Strong for emotional tracks — the glitch creates a visual hook that stops the scroll mid-feed.

"letting the internet decide if we're sitting on a hit or not"
04
DJ Set — Crowd Reaction

Close-up on hands at the mixer, then wide shot on the crowd at the drop. Authentic reactions only. A crowd responding to your music is the most powerful social proof you can post — no studio can fake this.

"I think our showcase went better than expected… should we release it?"
05
Studio BTS

Screen with the session open, hands on the keyboard. Mysterious — no need to show everything. People are drawn to process. Seeing something before anyone else triggers engagement and a sense of exclusivity.

"started as a random tuesday session…" / "6 months for 4 seconds"
06
Playback Reaction

Close-up on face while listening to the final mixdown. Authentic — smile, head nod, the moment of satisfaction. Pure emotion is the most shareable thing on the internet. Zero production needed, maximum impact.

"letting the internet decide" / overlay "coming soon"

How to use this: Don't post the same concept twice in a row. Rotate between them. Each format attracts a different type of engagement — aesthetic gets saves, crowd reaction gets shares, studio BTS gets comments. Mix the formats, track which one your audience responds to most, then double down on that one.

03 — Optimization

ONE VIDEO
IS NEVER
ONE VIDEO.

Every variable is a new ticket. Same footage, different caption, earlier cut, overlay removed — that's four posts. Multiply output without multiplying work. Then use the retention curve to know exactly what to fix.

Variable What to test What it impacts
Visual hook Entry at the drop, the build-up, or your best shot 3-second retention
Duration Short (10–15s) vs medium (20–30s) Watch time %
Caption style Situation / "life is peak" / mystery / raw process Saves & shares
Timing 6am–9am EST vs 5pm–8pm EST First 2hr reach
Text overlay With lyrics vs clean visual Shares & retention
Audio Original audio vs trending sound Organic reach
End CTA "Send this to a friend who loves [genre]" Shares × 3–4
Read Your Retention Curve — After Every Single Post
✓ Good Video
100% 50% 0
Gradual drop, stays above 50%

The algorithm reads this as quality and keeps pushing it.

→ Repost a variation immediately while it's hot.
✗ Bad Video
100% 50% 0
Drops to zero in the first 3 seconds

The hook isn't working. People leave before they even see your content.

→ Cut the opening. Start at the best moment.
✗ Bad Momentum
100% 50% 0
Steady decline throughout

Starts okay but loses the viewer mid-way. Something in the middle is killing it.

→ Shorten it. Cut dead time. Add a second hook halfway.
✗ Cliff Drop
100% 50% 0
Cliff drop at one specific point

Something in the middle kills it — a caption disappearing, a slow transition, a dead moment.

→ Find the exact second of the cliff. Cut that moment.

After every post: Bad Video → fix the hook. Bad Momentum → shorten it. Cliff Drop → find the exact drop and cut it. Good Video → repost a variation immediately. The curve tells you exactly what to fix. No guessing, no opinions — just data.

04 — Identity

VIEWS GET
FORGOTTEN.
BRANDS DON'T.

Viral content brings views. Branding creates real fans — people who come to your shows, buy your merch, and want to be part of your world. That's the difference between a spike and a career.

Your Visual World
Pick 3 colors.
Use nothing else.

One signature color, one neutral base, one dark anchor. Apply them everywhere — every video, every post, every thumbnail. Recognition is built through repetition, not variety. Change your colors and you restart from zero.

Your Symbol
Find the one thing
that means you.

A light, a gesture, a location, a color grade. Something that becomes a visual shorthand for your universe. When fans see it, they feel you before they read your name. That's the goal — recognition without a logo.

Your Caption Voice
Write like you talk.
Not like you're selling.

Say what your fans would say in a group chat. No generic lyrics, no empty hype lines. Direct, self-aware, specific. The caption is the second hook — it decides if they save, share, or scroll past.

Name Your Fanbase
Give your audience
an identity.

The artists who build real communities give their fans a name. It creates belonging. "The Waitlist." "The Beliebers." "Navy." When someone becomes part of a named group, they stop being a passive viewer and start being a fan. That's the shift you're after.

The Consistency Rule
One format.
60 days minimum.

Repetition builds pattern recognition in both the algorithm and your audience. The accounts that compound pick one content format and run it for months. Variation kills early growth. Commit to the format, let it compound, then expand.

The accounts that grow fast aren't posting more — they're posting with more intention. Every post should make the viewer feel like they missed something worth being part of. Build a world, not a feed.

05 — Automation

THE PRESAVE
SYSTEM THAT
RUNS ITSELF.

ManyChat turns every keyword into an automatic DM — and every DM into a presave, a stream, or a fan. Here's the exact setup independent artists use to build a presave list while the algorithm pushes their content further at the same time.

1
Create a ManyChat account — connect Instagram

Free plan works to start. Connect your Instagram business account and build a Flow triggered by a keyword. Use "PRESAVE" or your track title. Set the trigger on Direct Message keyword — Instagram's comment-trigger delivery has been unreliable platform-wide, and DM keyword is the mechanic that fires consistently right now.

2
Add the CTA to every caption

End every caption with: "DM me PRESAVE and I'll send you the link." Place it after the hook has landed, never in the first line. If you also want comment volume for reach, ask a separate open question — keep the reach ask and the delivery mechanic separate so neither depends on the other.

3
Reply to every comment yourself in the first hour

Visible activity under the post is read by the algorithm as a quality signal and pushes the video further — the same effect an automated public reply used to provide, without depending on a trigger that may not fire.

4
The DM — before release

The automatic DM reads: "Your support means everything. Here's your presave link: [LINK]" — personal, direct, converts. Everyone who messaged you now has the link. The system collects a warm audience before the track even drops.

5
Switch on drop day — zero extra work

Update the DM to: "It's OUT!! Stream it here: [LINK]" — everyone who ever triggered the keyword gets the streaming link automatically. More day 1 streams = better Spotify placement = more organic discovery = more streams. The system feeds itself.

Why this matters: More presaves = more day 1 streams = better Spotify placement = more organic discovery. Every keyword is a fan entering your funnel. Most artists are leaving this on the table by not having this setup.
